DAMASCUS, SYRIA (03:00 PM) – A senior official of Palestinian political party and resistance movement Hamas has been wounded in an apparent terrorist attack in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon.

Mohammed Hamdan, a high-ranking Hamas functionary, was severely wounded on Sunday as he tried to get into a car in a Sidon parking lot, according to AFP. The BMW reportedly exploded as Hamdan opened the door. The Hamas official is reported to have mainly sustained wounds to his legs.

Israeli news outlet Haaretz reported that military sources in Lebanon said Mohammed Hamdan has been rushed to the hospital and is undergoing surgery.

Lebanon is home to tens of thousands of Palestinians, many of whom are refugees. The biggest concentration of Palestinians in Lebanon is Ain al-Hilweh, which lies near Sidon and is home to some 61,000 Palestinian inhabitants.

The attack against Mohammed Hamdan has so far not been claimed by any organisation or state, and Hamas has not yet commented on the event.
