Hamas-Fatah talks, Gaza Strip

A Hamas official says that his group and the rival Fatah movement have reached a partial agreement on governing the Gaza Strip, but acknowledged that the two biggest problems salaries for ex-Hamas employees and control over the security forces remain unresolved.

The official did not provide details on the partial deal reached on Thursday. If the remaining issues can be ironed out, it would put into practice the unity government Palestinian factions entered into in April.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to discuss the matter with the press.

Tensions between Hamas and Fatah have spiked in recent weeks over Fatah claims that Hamas’s conduct of the recently concluded war with Israel led to unacceptably high losses of life and damage to property.
