BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:00 P.M.) – The so-called “Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham” (ISIS) launched a massive offensive in the eastern Homs countryside on Wednesday night that targeted the strategic town of Jubb Al-Jarrah, which is under Syrian Arab Army (SAA) control.
Initially, the Islamic State was able to make a series of gains east of Jubb Al-Jarrah, capturing the village of Khattab and its corresponding checkpoints after a violent battle with the National Defense Forces (NDF).
Following the capture of Khattab and Qubbah Hill, the Islamic State attempted to advance on Jubb Al-Jarrah, Maksar Al-Hissan and Al-Masoudiyah; however, they found themselves as the receipient of the Russian Air Force’s powerful airstrikes.
These airstrikes proved decisive for the Syrian Armed Forces, as it gave them time to get reinforcements to this front in order to reverse the Islamic State’s gains in eastern Homs.
Led by the 11th and 18th tank divisions, the Syrian Arab Army managed to recapture Qubbah Hill and its corresponding checkpoints, while also repelling the Islamic State’s primary assault on Jubb Al-Jarrah, Maksar Al-Hissan, and Al-Masoudiyah.
According to a military source in eastern Homs, the Syrian Arab Army killed more than 40 Islamic State terrorists last night, including several foreign militants from Saudi Arabia, Libya, Morocco, Egypt, and Iraq.
