Hundreds of people rallied in the Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams on Saturday to denounce US President Donald Trump’s statement to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied territory.
Protesters were seen holding Syrian flags and Druze flags.
“From here we say that the Golan [Heights] is Arab and Syrian and neither Trump nor any other person can decide its fate. The word that matters the most on the Arab land of the Golan [Heights], at first and last, is the word of our heroic Syrian Arab Army,” said protester Haiel Sharaf.
“He wants to give Israel land, he can give them one or two of his states in America,” said protester Adnan al-Safari. “But al-Golan has its own occupiers, Israel or any other state cannot take it.”
On Thursday, Trump posted a statement on Twitter, saying that the US would recognise Israel’s occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights, a territory the Israeli state captured from Syria in 1967.
