BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:10 P.M.) – The German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, that the US are no longer a reliable partner and called for European self-determination. Merkel made these remarks during a speech at a beerfest in Munich Trudering, where she was campaigning together with the Bavarian Minister President Horst Seehofer from the party of the Christian Social Union (CSU).

While Seehofer is known for his strong worded rhetoric, strong remarks are uncommon for the chancellor to voice, Merkel is often criticised for her indecisiveness. But following the latest G7 summit at Sicily, that led to a deep discord and Merkels assessment, that the talks were basically six against one, Trump also targeted Germany’s trade policy, labeling the many car sales of Germany’s motor companies in the US as “bad, very bad.”

In addition to trade policies Merkel and Trump also diverge in questions of climate protection and military budgeting of NATO member states. The following is a translated excerpt of Merkel’s speech on Sunday:

“The times in which we could fully rely on others have somewhat ceased, this I experienced in recent days. And therefore i can only say: We Europeans have to actually take our destiny in our own hands, naturally in friendship with the USA, in friendship with Great Britain, in good neighboorhood whereever possible with Russia and others too, but we need to know, we have to fight for our future ourselves, as Europeans for our destiny”.

Wow! Merkel speaking like an Euro-Leftie! I can’t believe it! She must really fear to lose the election! If all runs well, no more pro-US tories in major EU countries in a few days! High time to build the EU-Army or fully Europeanise NATO. Nevertheless, it was for a VERY long time Euro-Lefties were telling USA was not reliable, seeing EU countries as vassals and playing divide’n’conquer against us, mostly through their ‘privileged’ partnership with UK, now trying it again with Poland, now UK’s going out. As general DeGaulle said about 50y ago, “USA has no friends, only interests”. It’s… Read more »

No Merkel speaks like a true conservative. BTW. A recent pol says: She would get a 60-70% vote in the first round for being Kanzler if Germans would elect their President directly like French.

If we no longer want to lead the free world, somebody else will. The worse mistake an individual — or a country — can make is to assume that they are irreplaceable.

It is about time. It is also an admission that they didn´t before. But I don´t expect large changes, although they are due. Germany needs reliable friends, not arrogant exploiters, who start to whine about our foreign trade surplus. But let´s not forget that Phrump isn´t the first. It is EU countries that complain of this in the first place.

@Bleipriester, the trade surplus has to do with the German role in world economy. Certain industrial equipments tend to come from Germany. This industry has grown historically and there is not much the US or anyone in the EU can do about it. Trump and certain anti German EU circles only see the cars and some other exports where industries compete.

p.s. That is also why some leading trade fairs are in Hanover. Like Ligna. The fair for wood treating machines.

We had UK acting like a Trojan Horse, undermining EU construction from the inside. How do you think NSA had it so easy to tape all EU leaders phones for years. DeGaulle was freaking right at vetoing UK’s entry in the community. Actually, Trump is not so the reason : it was just mostly impossible to act this way as long UK was in but it was rally easy to read between the lines for very very long. You could already notice such things with Mitterrand, Khol, Chirac or Schroeder. It was pretty shy but more than clear to whom… Read more »
