BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:30 P.M.) – Supporters of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi gathered to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the 1 September Revolution in the city of Sabha late on Thursday, with celebrations going on until the early hours of Friday morning.

Gaddafi supporters marched through the city waving green flags and holding portraits of the former Libyan leader, who ruled the country from 1969 to 2011.

Clashes in Tripoli over the past few days have been jointly-condemned by British, American, Italian and French authorities, who say they destabilise the region.

The 1 September Revolution, which took place in 1969, saw King Idris’ monarchy overthrown by army officers led by Gaddafi, who then went on to establish his regime.
