BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:40 A.M.) – Photos of almost a dozen foreign fighters that served within the ranks of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) who were recently killed by Turkish-led forces in the Battle of Afrin have been released.
The Kurdish militia’s media wing has officially admitted to the death of 11 foreign fighters among them a French Breton, a Galician Spaniard, one volunteer from Britain, an Icelandic national and seven Turkish citizens (detail below).
The release of information on the fate of these individuals comes almost two weeks now since the engagement between Kurdish and Turkish-led forces in Afrin effectively drew to an end.
No details exist on how exactly any of the volunteers were killed, however the chances are that most – if not all – died in Turkish artillery shelling or airstrikes (the source of about two-thirds of all YPG losses in the Afrin battle) rather than frontline clashes.
