“Yellow vest” protesters took to the streets of Paris on Saturday for a fifth consecutive weekend of demonstrations.
This comes despite French President Emmanuel Macron’s plea to halt all demonstrations in wake of the Strasbourg Christmas market attack.
Protesters dressed in yellow vests were seen running away from tear gas canisters fired by police to disperse the crowd.
Officers also blocked protesters from reaching important streets in the capital’s centre.
Weeks of civil unrest across France have forced the government into making multiple concessions. The “gilets jaunes” (yellow-vest in English) were initially motivated by the announcement of fuel tax hikes, but the movement evolved into an expression of general anger at high costs of living, poverty and inequality in the country.
