BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:15 P.M.) – Video footage (below) has been released by the Damascus-now media group showing former rebel commanders and fighters of the Ahmad Abdo Martyrs Brigade readying themselves to fighting Islamic State forces alongside the Syrian Army in eastern Syria.
The footage showcases commander Ahmad Shaaben, head of the what use to be the Maghawir as-Sahraa unit of the Ahmad Abdo Martyrs Brigade prior to his and his unit’s defection to the Syrian Army.
Maghawir as-Sahraa ranks have since reconciled with the Syrian government following their defection and are now preparing to join the Syrian Army’s ongoing battle against ISIS in the country’s east.
The former rebels have likely been incorporated into either the Qalamoun Shield Forces (which consists of many reconciled militants) or a pro-government paramilitary group similar to it rather than the actual Syrian Army.
