Raya Al Hassan was sworn in as Lebanon’s interior minister in Beirut on Wednesday, becoming the first woman to hold the position in an Arab world country.
Al Hassan was already a trail blazer, in 2009 becoming the country’s first female finance minister.
She is part of the new government of Prime Minister Saad Hariri which has a total of four female ministers.
The formation of a new government broke a nine-month deadlock that followed the country’s May 2018 parliamentary elections.
The new government is reportedly set to include three ministers affiliated with the Hezbollah organiatin.
