The Syrian Armed Forces officially declared today it has fully recaptured a rebel-held town in the Eastern Ghouta region after weeks of battles.
Three days ago, the Army’ Republican Guard managed to enter Maydaa, conducting sophisticated urban warfare against the Saudi-backed Jaish al-Islam inside the village.
With the Islamist rebels squeezed in the western parts, they desperately launched a counter-offensive yesterday, forcing the government troops to abandon a few blocks.
However, a swift blitz conducted by the Army this morning, backed by heavy airstrikes, granted the elite troops full control of the whole village after destroying all tunnels and trenches used by the insurgents.
To secure their gains, the troops even pushed a few kilometers to the west making any potential counter attack next to impossible.
