As battles continue to rage for the gas-rich area in east Homs, the Syrian Army, backed by allied forces, managed today to make fresh gains in the desert area, pushing the Islamic State eastward and recapturing more territories.

A military source told AMN that government forces, supported by Syrian and Russian airstrikes, seized several sites to the east of the strategic Jihhar crossroad including Majbel Asphalt area, Al-Baydah al Sharqiyah and al-Baydah al-Gharbiyah.

Simultaneously, government troops made a significant advance to the north of Jihhar crossroad after securing Hayyan Company, imposing full control on several hilltops overlooking Al-Mahr Oil Field.

The sources confirmed that scores of ISIS fighters have been killed in the process.

The area retains a strategic importance since it provides the majority of fuel needs for the sanctioned country.
