DAMASCUS, SYRIA (4:00 P.M.) – On Sunday, the Islamic State massacred dozens of Kurdish combattants after overwhelming positions controlled by the ‘Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) on the provincial border between Hasakah and Deir Ezzor.
In what appeared to be a succesful hit-and-run operation, jihadist militants infiltrated several checkpoints and outposts along the main road between Al-Salhiyah and Sor after which many SDF members were caught off-guard and executed on the spot.
Some 40 photos released by Amaq Agency indicate the scale of the short-lived ISIS attack which aimed solely at inflicting heavy casualties upon the SDF, likely in direct retaliation over the ongoing ‘Al-Jazirah Storm’ offensive that began on September 9.
Viewer discretion is advised:
Such hit-and-run operations have become a repeated scenario in the region as the SDF continues to seize largely abanboned Islamic State ground, only to have jihadist militants launch deadly counter-attacks when they least expect it.
The United States Air Force is heavily involved in driving back ISIS from its last towns in southern Hasakah and eastern Deir Ezzor yet the US-led coalition somehow managed to miss the massive Islamic State convoy seen above.
