BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 P.M.) – The Syrian government and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) have begun a new round of peace talks in Damascus amid the announcement of the planned Turkish safe zone in northern Syria.

According to a military source in Damascus, the two parties discussed ways to counter the Turkish safe zone plan, while also pushing towards a peaceful settlement in northeast Syria.

The source said Damascus offered to protect the SDC areas east of the Euphrates if they allowed for the return of government institutions, as well as the raising of the Syrian flag in their areas.

The SDC will be allowed to fly their flag and their militiamen in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) can still carry their weapons, as they will be protecting their areas in northeast Syria.

The source added that the two parties did not discuss federalizing northeast Syria, which has often been a major roadblock in the peace taks.

  • Knee-jerk contradiction

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

For all its neighbours, applying a Turkish safe zone would mean applying a revised Sèvres treaty map…
