BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:20 P.M.)- The European Union’s foreign policy official, Joseph Borrell, said on Sunday, that the European Union is concerned about what he called “sea [military] movements” in the eastern Mediterranean recently, amid an escalation of the dispute accompanied by tension between Ankara on the one hand, and Cairo and Athens on the other hand, over the demarcation of the maritime borders.

“The recent sea movements in the eastern Mediterranean are extremely worrying, and will not contribute to finding solutions, but rather lead to greater enmity and lack of confidence,” Borrell said in a statement.

He stressed that “determining the maritime borders should be through dialogue and negotiations, not through unilateral actions and the movement of the navy forces.”

He added that “the current course will not serve the interests of Turkey or the Union,” expressing his “readiness to sponsor a dialogue and facilitate participation to resolve differences in that region.”

On Thursday, Egypt and Greece signed an agreement to demarcate the maritime borders between the two countries to define the exclusive economic zone between Egypt and Greece.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the agreement between Egypt and Greece to demarcate the maritime borders between them is of no value, stressing that his country has resumed exploration work in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry had stated that “the area specified within the Egyptian-Greek agreement falls within the Turkish continental shelf .”

They added that “Turkey considers the agreement null and void, adding that it also violates Libyan maritime rights.”

It’s time for Joseph Borrell to put his head out of the sand! The ErDOG is already ravaging Syria for 9 years, even Russia’s intervention in Syria didn’t made him stop, he even shot down a Russian arcraft (maybe more) and had Russia’s ambassador assassinated in front of the media. This guy praises the Führer’s regime as an effective form of government! 400,000 jihadis and mercenaries rushed into Syria from Turkey, and this was only up to early 2017! He doesn’t cares about UNSC resolution, doesn’t cares about international laws so stop doing your Chamberlain, this high on cocaine roach… Read more »

Not Borrell but Turkey puts the head in sand. I follow Borrell’s statements for some time. He is diplomatic – and does not have the French tongue of a coq de combat. But if you cross out his polite diplomatic phrases about negotiations, love, peace, the good of all and read only the yeast, he is clear. When he visited Greece his spoke not of solidarity but of an obligation to defend Greek rights.
Plus he issued a great diplomatic hog wash soothing Turkish pride. Being a typical Turk Erdogan only ate the sweet hog wash.

I have to update you on some old news. This will enable you to fully evaluate Borrell’s current Statement on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.  https://eeas.europa.eu/headquarters/headquarters-homepage_en/83911 On the 13 July 2020, EU foreign ministers decided to explore ways of easing tensions with Turkey. They focused on all open fronts between the EU and Turkey, ranging from Turkish illegal drilling activities in the Mediterranean to Ankara’s involvement in Libya and Syria. The first step will be a last attempt for dialogue. But if Ankara continues acting in the same way, then Europeans want to toughen their stance,  And that last… Read more »

The US have held their hand over Erdogan’s head so far. They have build Turkey up to contain the EU and Russia. When Trump spoke about America’s many enemies, he mentioned the EU first. And for his chief target in the EU he always chooses Germany as one of the cores of the EU. The smaller EU members find this nice, since he courts them, their prides and pampers their fears of Russia and their old resentiments against Germany at the same time. Do you know what it means when Germany spends 2% of GDP on military after 2024 as… Read more »

A clear statement against Turkey, if You know Borrell’s prior communiques. Essentially Turkey must act “not through unilateral actions and mobilisation of naval forces. Disputes must be solved in accordance with international law.” But this means that the current boundaries along the Turkish coast are valid. They were created by the peace treaties of 1912, after the Italian-Turkish war, and 1923, after the Turko-Greek war. In both cases the lack of Turkish naval forces created the current maritime borders. Maritime customary law provides that inhabited Islands have the same type of EEZ on the sea shelf as the mainland. Now… Read more »
