BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:30 A.M.) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to stand by “our Qatari brothers’, as the country continues to face blockades by Saudi Arabia and its regional allies. He was speaking at the dinner with the members of his Justice and Development (AK) Party in Istanbul, Friday.
Erdogan stated that the tension between the Gulf state countries has “shaded the Ramadan excitement of all Muslims”, and underlined that “there won’t be any winners of the brother’s fight”.
Earlier in the day, the Turkish parliament passed a bill approving the deployment of Turkish troops to Qatar as a show of support.
Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Bahrain simultaneously broke off diplomatic ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing the country of supporting terrorist organisations. On Monday morning, the nations closed both their air and land borders with Qatar, prompting Qatar to call back its diplomats abroad.
