BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:15 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army’s elite Republican Guard forces were transported from Damascus to the Qamishli Military Airport after a long stint in the Syrian capital.

According to a military source close to Al-Masdar, the Syrian Arab Army’s 104th Airborne Brigade was redeployed to the Deir Ezzor Governorate to assist the other wing of their Republican Guard unit.

The military source added that these forces will be transported by helicopter to the 137th Artillery Brigade’s headquarters in Deir Ezzor; they will remain in this desert province indefinitely.

The Syrian Arab Army repelled a major Islamic State (ISIS) offensive today after several hours of nonstop firefights in the Panorama area of west Deir Ezzor.

If it flies over 5km high, no ManPADS and no AA-guns can hit.
BTW, Russians have very efficient ECM systems against missiles, they’ve learnt it the hard way in Afghanistan. The only real danger is actually ATGMs when they’re about to land or take-off as many can be used up to 150-200m ceiling and most of the time are guided through SACLOS with a wire : no way to jam this, alhough a smokescreen can work well

Thats something very strange in this war : every belligerent announces its offensives and other moves to the media BEFORE they launch it . Unbilievable

Read carefully, they are being flown to Qamishli Military Airport. From there by helicopter at unspecified dates or times. There are already helicopter flights operating into into Deir Ezzor and I am sure ISIS already know this. Clearly ISIS is unable to interrupt these flights.

From what I understand, the helicopter drop offs are very high risk and that’s why we didn’t hear about the 200 soldiers dropped off earlier this week until after they were already dropped off in the cover of night. Flights are very rare due to the risk and here they are letting them know in advance that they are coming soon, and on top of that where they will be landing. THAT’S NUTS!

Usual route of helicopters is along Euphrates river to Deir ez Zor. They will be landing at 137 brigade so risk is lower than landing currently on airport.

A unit/size would be helpful/informative! How about ‘elements of the Syrian Arab Army’s elite Republican Guard forces’, instead, with a report of the unit(s) and strength. Not to be didactic, but brigades are made up of sub-formations of battalions (or regiments), and sub-units of companies and platoons (the unit in the pic, if actual, would constitute a company). I think we all understand the the whole brigade is not being deployed. I understand that you guys are not ‘professionals’, per se, but you could seek to improve your writing as you go. I understand, also, that this info may not… Read more »

Hard topic. It is quite classified and structure of RG remains a secret below the brigade/battalion level. Seeing the picture seems like most of the people are from RG seeing their uniforms.

It is 137th Mechanised Brigade not Artillery. Artillery in SAA is in regiments.
