Abbas Shouman, the Deputy Chief of the Al-Azhar Islamic School, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) during an interview on Thursday that the mobile phone game “Pokemon Go” is prohibited by Islamic law.
Shouman claimed playing the game is equivalent to drinking alcohol, which is also forbidden by Islam.
“It negatively influences the mind and harms the player or others without being aware of that,” Shouman told the DPA on Thursday.
Al-Azhar School is considered one of the most prestigious scholastic facilities for Islamic studies in Egypt; it is also located near the historical Al-Azhar Mosque.
The Deputy Chief of this school said that playing this game is a sin, citing its obsessive nature as the primary reason for its ban.
Pokemon Go is not yet available in Egypt.
