BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:50 P.M.) – Reports are emerging which indicate that Syrian Army rocket artillery units have begun to target rebel positions inside militant-controlled areas of Daraa city.
Opposition sources state that several Elephant rockets were fired at rebel forces in the Daraa Refugee Camp area of the city, control of which is reportedly split about 50/50 between the opposing belligerents.
Whilst nothing major has yet taken place, it is worth noting that although Daraa city has been a relatively quiet front for nine months now, a look into the history of engagements in the area shows that what often turns out to be sporadic shelling and light gunfights can quickly materialize into all-out offensives.
In any case, a general ceasefire between Syrian government and rebel forces technically remains in effect throughout the provinces of Daraa and Quneitra for the time being and this recent shelling of militant positions (as reported by opposition sources) may just be a standard Syrian Army response to its own control points coming under insurgent fire.
