The final remnants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) came under heavy bombardment near Baghouz on Wednesday.
Fighters from the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were filmed engaging in skirmishes with IS on Wednesday morning.
As night fell, airstrikes and mortar fire lit up the sky, with the enclave shelled for the third night in a row.
The attack on IS’s final stronghold has been periodically paused since it began on March 1 to allow thousands of civilians, many of them reportedly wives and children of IS fighters, to leave.
Some still remain, although around 3,000 IS fighters and their families have surrendered to SDF forces since Monday, according to reports.
