BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:40 P.M.) – The Russian and Syrian air forces have not conducted a single airstrike over northwestern Syria since 12:00 A.M. (local time) last night, a military source told Al-Masdar.

According to the source, the absence of Syrian and Russian jets is likely due to the resumption of ceasefire talks between Moscow and Ankara.

Over the last two weeks, both the Russian and Turkish armed forces have found little common ground on the situation in northwestern Syria, as Ankara wants all military activity halted and the withdrawal of the Syrian troops from the recently captured areas.

Russia, on the hand, wants Turkey to separate their allied rebel groups from the jihadist forces in the Idlib Governorate. Turkey’s reluctance to do so has prompted Russia to continue their strikes against groups like Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party.

This is beyond idiotic. HTS has stated and demonstrated that they will not abide by any cease fire. Russia’s failure to press the attack continuously gives HTS time to regroup and rearm. This insanity has cost and will continue to cost the Syrian army many unnecessary casualties.

Indeed, but this is not idiotic one bit, as it is entirely calculated, like it is every darn time. Putin has double-dealings with Erdogan, ranging from S-400s to gaz pipelines. Syrian sovereignty is a non-issue within that scope. The same way he lets Israelis target whatever the h**l they want around every time they please so long as they tell his forces in advance, it is alright. Syrian soil has become one of his bargains in his quest for local dominance. He is not working on behalf of its territorial integrity. Had he wanted so, Turkey would have to park… Read more »

No of course they can’t win, specially in their current shape. The idea is not to open a new critical front with enemies armed to the hilt (one NATO, and a USA-funded and equipped military fifth column no less) and enjoying peacetime for the past years while Syrians were getting torn up and eaten from the inside all the while, that would be a no-brainer, I agree. My point was more that Putin is in no way the guarantor for Syrian national integrity that he keeps on telling the world , and the Syrians themselves. He postures as a strategic… Read more »

Ceasefire again gives the convenience for Erdog to breastfeed his dear ‘Jihadi’ boys Puti acting as midwife.
