BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:35 A.M.) – Scuffles erupted in Istanbul on Tuesday between Turkish police and Kurds during the celebrations for Iranic New Year, also known as Newroz.
Multiple arrests were reportedly made as a result of the confrontation.
Last year’s Newroz festivities were banned in several places around Turkey amid fears of unrest.
Newroz is a Persian celebration of the New Year shared by other Iranic ethnic groups such as the Kurds.
Its observance has become an important part of expressing Kurdish cultural identity. The festival is also largely celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, India and Azerbaijan amongst others.
