Intense skirmishes are occurring in Darayya (Damascus suburb) overnight and have been during the past 48 hours as airstrikes, missiles, snipers and gunfire continue to target areas held by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) affiliated ‘Martyrs of Islam Brigade’ and Ajnad al-Sham.
Approximately 15 rebel fighters were killed on Friday and Saturday, many of which were subsequently mourned by Darayya’s rebel factions online.
With its territories slowly dwindling, rebel fighters are in a dire state and have little prospect of new reinforcements, armaments or supplies.
Darayya represents a symbolic Damascus stronghold for the Syrian Opposition and still maintains a defiant rebel presence which began in late 2012.
Nevertheless, government troops – spearheaded by the Republican Guards – have taken control at least 65% of Darayya, reaching into the very heart of the district.
