The JY-27 ‘Wide Mat’ long-range early warning radar which was reported destroyed during the 20 January Israeli Air Force strike on the Damascus airport has been successfully restored, the Sina news portal has reported, citing fresh satellite photos of the airport and the surrounding area.

According to the portal, media reportsabout the destruction of the JY-27 were premature, since the strike appeared to have destroyed only the JY-27’s antenna, not its transmitter, with Syrian air defence troops able to simply replace the antenna with a spare and turn the system back on. “Otherwise, it would be much more difficult to redeploy the radar,” Sina indicated.

Sina suggested that Israel targeted the radar system repeatedly for its “good anti-stealth capability”, including its alleged ability to detect IAF F-35s.
Ultimately, the portal indicated that Syria may strengthen defences around the Damascus airport by deploying its newly-received S-300 missile systems in the area, combining these with Syria’s existing stock of SA-11 and Pantsir-S1 air defences, creating a relatively large “challenge” for the IAF.

Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes in Syria, with the latest attack taking place last weekend against an alleged ‘Iran-linked’ missile factory in Hama province. Tel Aviv has accused Tehran of attempting to establish a foothold in Syria for a possible future military attack against Israel.

Iranian officials have insisted that the country’s presence in Syria, limited to military advisers, arms and technical assistance, was provided to Syria at Damascus’ behest to help the country in its fight against Islamist terrorism.

The frequency of Israeli attacks declined last year after the deployment of Russian-made S-300 air defence batteries in the war-torn country, but has not halted them entirely, with the IAF resorting to launching attacks from Lebanese airspace to hinder an effective defence, and reportedly using new standoff munitions to allow its planes to evade Syrian defences.

Israel launched a series of cruise missiles and guided bomb strikes against alleged ‘Iranian’ and ‘Iranian-linked’ sites in Syria on 20 and 21 January after an alleged Iranian rocket was intercepted over the Golan Heights.

The strikes, concentrated on the Damascus International Airport, left 11 people dead, including four Syrian troops. According to the Russian military, Syrian air defences managed to intercept over 30 cruise missiles.

However, some projectiles made it through, destroying or damaging multiple warehouse buildings, and seeming to destroy the JY-27 radar, and several Pantsir systems. The airport’s main building remained untouched.

The best “defense” weapon for Syria should be the Iskander ! Israel would know that after any attack a Iskander missile would hit a military base inside Israel. That’s the best defense. Forget about the S300 just ( maybe ) able to shoot down an A/C flight gently ( no behind mountains ) overhead Syria.

You’re right Emile, and that is I’m afraid exactly why Putin will never grant the Syrian armed forces with such a key tactical game-changer. More generally, we can consider a thumb rule stating that any weapon-system with a certified capacity to incur severe and unacceptable level of damage to Israeli military infrastructure will be forbidden and withheld from their inventories and control. That is the core agreement obtained from Nuttanyahu in his many dealings with the Tzar over the past years : no “dangerous” hardware in the hands of Damascus giving them even remotely even odds that would make us… Read more »

You all forgot how during 2016 Putin offered to Assad Syria to be officially protected by Russian Federation (of course with a long term agreement and a bunch of contracts like Armenia is now under the military umbrella of Russia). However, Assad declined (not sure why). So, Putin obviously wasn’t so happy about that. Even that he respected Assad decision but he made it clear Russia is not going to protect Syria from foreign countries (since Assad declined). Russia will protect Syria only from terrorists. That’s why boys and girls Russia has its own reservations to not get involved between… Read more »

Emile : do you really want Damascus to be razed? First, Iskander is slower than S-200 which Arrow-3 already intercepted… Well, with, in terms of range, these layers to go through : Arrow-3 THAAD David’s Sling Patriot PAC-2 Arrow-2 Iron Dome Patriot PAC-3 [Iron Beam]????? [Centurion C-RAM]????? With 7 [8-9] layers to go through, you may need a LOT of Iskander to pierce through… And do not assume IDF will stay idle… And prepare yourself to a disproportionate reaction. Why d’you think Hezbollah doesn’t dares to attack Israel any more? That even ISIS apologised after some of their high on… Read more »

Leon Panetta himself and the then-commander of CENTCOM both repeatedly stated officially that there are no known reliable assets capable of solid defense against most modern Theatre BMs such zs the Iskander (or higher-class Topol-Ms for that matter)within the American ABM apapratus, and you expect the world to believe that Israel’s second-rate Congress-diverted US tech that didnt make it to the American DoD are somehow able to do so ? keep the nice dreams going, it will be double the fall whenever you get volleys right on your faces. Iskader-class SRBMs are precisely designed as ABM’piercers with completely unique evavive capabilities… Read more »

Russia has already given Israel S300 information how its work and how to avoid being detected. Russia cannot be trusted when it comes to Israel. Russia looking for their own intrest. rather then their allies. Russia also supporting turkey against Syria and iran. its upto SAA/Iraq/Iran Hezbollah and Iraqi ressitance.

ROFL, not even need for Russia : Egypt and 3-4 EU countries have S-300. IDF did serious training while participating several NATO drills or with Egyptian S-300. How d’you think al-Sisi succeeded so easily in his coup? 🙂 You didn’t thought Mossad would let the Ikhwan terrorists ruling Egypt for long, did you? “Russia looking for their own intrest.” => Hopefully! “rather then their allies” => With some of her parters, which I wouldn’t call allies, well, with friends like these, you don’t need enemies any more : they’re worst 🙂 “Russia also supporting turkey against Syria and iran” =>… Read more »

It wil be destroyed again and again……Syria has not weapons to defense itselft from Israel missiles. S/300 is totally useless, Parkin 50% efficient, and so on.

Syria has to get systems from Iran and return Russian systems home.

Reverse engineered US systems from the 60’s or 70’s? Israel will LOVE it! They had the same 30-40 years ago 😉

Syria should keep installing Chinese radar cos it can see even F35 that origin from North Korea. Put it at all your border, so stealth plane factory can close shop.

That indeed the main reason, why US dont dare to attack North Korea even they declared war. Wait till you see their magneto sub that also in production by Chinese factory.

Syria should deal directly with North Korea if they want their missile that flyover Japan. North Korea missile have something that dont possess by other missile. Upon locked in, they chase target like compass detected magnet or decoy dont work against their missile unless the connection broken.

Their missile were using gyrocompass as sensor or why their sub named magneto. Their torpedo chase target like homing device. Decoy dont work cos any steel object blocking the target would be bypass by the sensor and upon connection reached the target, the missile would bend as needed, based on gradient detected by the sensor (from decoy to target) avoiding the decoy in front of the missile (unless the target can keep the decoy inline with the missile, then it will hit the decoy before could reach the target) Gyrocompass is something new to the military world and dont underscore… Read more »

The Russians should be willing to show they are committed to their Syrian project.
Until the Syrians are trained to use the S-300s competently, the Russians should inform the Israelis they will be manning them in the meantime. Any attack on Russian soldiers and technicians would meet with an instant response.

ROFL! Soviets sent their own aircraft and pilots to several anti-Israeli wars… Guess what? They were shot down like the others! Moreover, Russians don’t want Khamenei to Lebanonise Syria. Bibi makes their day by bombng IRGC+Hezb. Putin also voted for the Hezb disarmament with UNSC Res.1701 and to forbid Iranian from importing/exporting/transferring missiles/missiles parts/missiles technology. Putin already warned Khamenei and Nasrallah, these morons don’t care, let them assume the consequences of their acts! And frankly, Assad should better relocate Pantsir and S-300 to the north and let Israelis terrorise those who used terrorism against Israelis and Jews in about 50… Read more »

As usual you lack of historical knowledge lies in plain sight, and propaganda replaces of facts. The Kippur War was the perfect counter-example to that, Egyptian pilots perfected many dogfighting skills and strategies, changed their habits and doctrines from the ground through a years-long training that in the end completely surprised and demoralized Israel pilots used to second-rate, easy to beat Arab pilots that they vanquished so swiftly in the 6 day war. That reality culminated during the battle of Al-Mansourah, where several dozen IDF planes thought they could destroy the Egyptian airbase in one sweep like old times… the… Read more »
