Jihadi rebels fighting government troops in the northern city of Aleppo are now flying hundreds of Helium balloons filled with an AK-47 bullet and metals to hamper airstrikes.

It is unknown who came up with this idea and how effective it will be, but photos released by a pro-opposition group displayed a man using an air pump (purportedly containing Helium) to inflate balloons.

According to jihadi sources, the idea is based on the fact that balloons will be sucked by engines of fighter jets, thus causing the bullets to explode inside the engines.

Earlier, huge cloud of black smoke was seen hovering above the rebel-held districts of Aleppo as rebel supporters as well as anti-government activists burned tires to deter the airstrikes.

black smoke

Two days ago, the jihadi fighters launched a wide-scale offensive to lift the two-week long siege imposed on the eastern districts of Aleppo. They managed to seize several Army positions and hilltops outside the Artillery School in southern Aleppo.

And they fastly learnt it was useless… 🙂
The barrage balloons are an old tactic that was already used during WW1 but, not used this way :

And even like this, it wasn’t very efficient at all 😉

Nothing more than a propaganda effort just like the burning tyres. The tyres were being burnt and the balloon released in east Aleppo when there was a twelve mile per hour wind blowing from the west, So the smoke and the balloons are being blown away from the area where the combat is taking place and the aircraft are flying. To work, the wind would have to be from the east. Added to which, Russian planes use a computer-assisted bombing system which would be immune to the smoke. I doubt it’s helium either, far more likely to be hydrogen which… Read more »

helium baloons will keep rising much higher than 5500 m until they explode due to pressure difference. A drone should pin point the ballon blow up place and call a strike on it.
