BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:05 P.M.) – Turkey-led forces have regained control over a key mountain Syria’s Afrin region following an artillery-backed counter-attack by Kurdish paramilitary fighters on Monday.

In the last hour, Turkey-led militias announced they had retaken control over the strategic high-ground of Mount Barsaya in Afrin as part of a renewed assault against Kurdish forces throughout the region.

The development comes after pro-Ankara forces seized the mountain on Monday but were then pushed to retreat from it back to their original positions within several hours once Kurdish paras launched a counter-assault aided by artillery fire.

Mount Barsaya is important insofar as it offers fire control over a number of towns and villages that guard the northeastern approach to Afrin city – the prize target of Ankara’s ‘Olive Branch’ operation – and it is yet to be seen how the Turkish Army and Free Syrian Army militias operating under its command exploit this most recent advance.

As long as nobody manages to fortify the summit – it can go on.
