BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:23 A.M.) – The Syrian Army and allied paramilitary groups have kicked-off a major operation the clear the desert countryside of western Deir Ezzor province from an ongoing Islamic State insurgency.
The operation partially started about one week ago, however only now have the Syrian Army and the National Defence Forces (Syrian national paramilitary) begun to commit major resources to it.
According to military-affiliated sources, the main blow of the government offensive is being delivered via the Euphrates city of Al-Mayadeen which in previous weeks has witnessed very heavy assaults against it by ISIS.
Overall, the terrorist group’s presence in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor has been a considerable thorn in the side of Syrian pro-government forces for several months and now the Syrian Army high command has lost its patience on a front that it hoped wold be relatively quiet after the victories of 2017.
Updates to follow.
