BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:53 P.M.) – After days of savage clashes north of Deir Ezzor city, the Syrian Arab Army has made a massive breakthrough, liberating a major town, a key hill and a number of military areas from ISIS militants.
According to sources, the Syrian Army forces liberated from ISIS the strategic town of Ayyash, the settlement’s local hilltop and a grouping of important military bases around the town.
In achieving this, the Syrian Army has virtually reversed all ISIS gains made around Deir Ezzor in 2015 and have secured the gateway town that commands entry into the city from the northern direction.
The presence of army bases around Ayyash in addition to the town’s local hill serve as ideal terrain in which Syrian forces can lock-down their defensive perimeter north of Deir Ezzor city and prepare for any future ISIS counterattacks.
At the same time, Ayyash and its surrounding area can also serve as an ideal springboard point by which the Syrian Army can continue to push north up the west bank of the Euphrates River.
