DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:15 P.M.) – The wide-scale military operation launched earlier by the government forces to secure the last rebel bastion in the northeastern flanks of the capital has finally paid off with the whole neighborhood of Qaboun is now under the government control.
The Islamist insurgents eventually relinquished most of their demands – most prominently moving to the Eastern Ghouta region – and succumbed to the government following the great advances made by the Syrian Army and the unbearable death toll among the militants.
Earlier today, the Syrian Army managed to uncover an important tunnel used as a main supply route for the Faylaq al-Rahman militiamen; stretching from Qaboun to Arbin in the Eastern Ghouta.
A state of chaos has prevailed amongst the rebels as their defensives entirely collapsed.
Various rebel groups holed up in the rebel-held neighborhood exchanged accusations of treason and concluding secret deals with the government officials.
Last week, the Army troops suspended its military campaign to allow an evacuation deal to be concluded.
However, the operation was soon resumed as some rebel groups opposed the negotiations. Meanwhile, militants in the nearby Barzeh neighborhood continue to leave their bastion to the northwestern province of Idlib as per an agreement with the Syrian government.
Those who accepted reconciliation will stay in their district after having their status settled.
