BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:00 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) eliminated an Islamic State  (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) sleeper cell in the southern region of Syria this evening, a source told Al-Masdar News.

According to a military communique in the area, the Syrian Arab Army stormed a cave used by the Islamic State sleeper cell to store weapons and other supplies in the Tuloul Al-Safa region in the Al-Sweida Governorate.

The communique added that the Syrian Arab Army managed to eliminate all three Islamic State terrorists that were hiding inside the cave, while also confiscating all of their equipment.

In November, the Syrian Arab Army announced the liberation of the Tuloul Al-Safa region after a several-month-long battle against the Islamic State terror group.

However, since declaring victory in southern Syria, the Syrian Arab Army has been uncovering many sleeper cells and warehouses used by the terrorist forces.

A step towards peace maybe, but also a reminder that all over those parts of Syria retaken from IS and the various armed opposition groups there are certainly large numbers of hidden weapons and explosives caches; and very probably sleeper units and anti-Government sympathisers waiting for the Syrian Army to become involved in a major operation that requires huge numbers of troops to be withdrawn and sent elsewhere – whether it’s to retake Idlib (a massive undertaking); to block Turkish incursions in Manbij or towards Aleppo (a long-coveted prize for the Turks); or crossing the Euphrates in force to deal… Read more »
