BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:20 P.M.) – At approximately 3:00 P.M. (local time), the Russian air defenses intercepted several drones that were flying over the Latakia Governorate city of Jableh near the Hmeimim Airbase.
According to a source near the scene, the Russian air defenses shot down at least three of the armed drones, preventing them from bombing this densely populated area in western Syria.
None of the armed drones were able to drop bombs on their intended targets.
The source said that the Syrian and Russian forces believe these drones originated in the Jisr Al-Shughour countryside of the Idlib Governorate; this area is primarily controlled by the jihadist rebels of the Turkestan Islamic Party and Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.
In the past, when the jihadist rebels launched drone attacks, the Russian Air Force would respond by heavily bombing the southwestern countryside of the Idlib Governorate.
