BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:10 A.M.) – The Russian Air Force has unleashed a flurry of airstrikes over the southwestern countryside of the Deir Ezzor Governorate this evening, a military source told Al-Masdar News.

According to the source, the Russian Air Force primarily targeted the Islamic State’s (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) positions near the town of Harbisha in southwestern Deir Ezzor.

Tonight’s attack on the Islamic State’s positions in southwestern Deir Ezzor comes just 48 hours after a Syrian military convoy disappeared along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor Highway.

The Syrian high command believes this Syrian Army convoy was attacked by the Islamic State and the soldiers were taken hostage by the terrorist group.

The Russian Air Force typically targets the jihadist rebels in northwestern Syria; however, with the frequent Islamic State ambushes in the Deir Ezzor and Homs governorates, they have switched their attention to this desert front.
