Beirut (5:05 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), led by the elite Tiger Forces, has liberated the strategic town of Souran in northern Hama, effectively nullifying all gains made by the Jihadist-Islamist forces since they launched their spring offensive on March 21st.
The Tiger Forces stormed the town of Souran early on this morning (April 16th) under the cover of massed artillery and with the insurance of Russian airpower which carryied out sorties in the Jihadist’s rear areas. The assault was made from the southern direction, out of the town of Ma’ardes. The Tiger Forces engaged in a more-or-less 10 hour battle for the town against the Hai’yat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist group. The operation is reported to have resulted in the deaths of tens of HTS militants.
Air support provided by the Russian Aerospace Forces (RuAF) fulfilled both the roles of tactical interdiction and interdiction proper, with terrorist fire support positions as well as supply lines being targeted and destroyed.
Whether this most recent pro-government victory is capitalized on with additional advances to further comprise the northern Hama salient or just part of a fire brigade operation (i.e. to restore the front to the November 2016 boundaries) is yet to be seen. However, the sheer number of Tiger Forces troops and equipment recently moved into the target sector strongly indicates the former possibility.
