On Sunday morning, an unidentified Palestinian woman detonated an IED (improvised explosive device) at the Al-Za’im checkpoint near the holy city of Jerusalem after a soldier from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) approached her vehicle.
Following the explosion, the Palestinian woman was shot by the soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces that were manning the Al-Za’im Checkpoint; this left the suicide bomber with severe wounds.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces Spokesperson, the Palestinian suicide bomber was taken to a nearby hospital in east Jerusalem for treatment; she is currently in critical condition and currently unidentified.
The suicide bomber’s political affiliation is not known at this moment; however, this attack at the Al-Za’im Checkpoint marks the first time since 2008 that a Palestinian has committed suicide attack in this contested area.
The recent violence in east Jerusalem has prompted the Israeli police to remain on high alert after Israeli citizens attacked a number of Palestinian Muslims outside of the Al-Aqsa Mosque this week.
In the last 48 hours, 6 Palestinian civilians have been reportedly killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the West Bank region, marking the bloodiest encounter in the country since the Israeli bombardment of Gaza in the summer of 2014.
