BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:20 P.M.) – The Russian Foreign Ministry has officially summoned the Israeli Envoy to Russia in response to the downing of the IL-20 plane last night.
Russia is demanding Israel explain why they did not contact them prior to their large-scale assault on western Syria, which saw them target several areas across the Latakia, Hama, Homs, and Tartous governorates.
“Israel did not warn the command of the Russian troops in Syria about the planned operation. We received a notification via hotline less than a minute before the strike, which did not allow the Russian aircraft to be directed to a safe zone.”
The Israeli attack on the IL-20 plane resulted in the death of at least 14 Russians, the Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu said in a statement.
“The Russian Defense Ministry had said earlier that Russia’s Hmeimim Airbase had lost contact with the crew of the Russian IL-20 military aircraft with 14 servicemen on board late on Monday.”
Israel has yet to issue a public statement regarding this latest attack.
