BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:50 P.M.) – Heavy clashes have erupted between Islamic State militants and Syrian rebels in southern Damascus after the former attempted an operation this morning to seize the latter’s positions in the Yalda district.
According to reports from pro-government sources observing conflict events in Damascus, this morning witnessed Islamic State-affiliated fighters launch a powerful assault against rebels of the Jaysh al-Islam faction in the district of Yalda.
Using shock troops backed up by medium weapons support, ISIS attempted to overrun Jaysh al-Islam positions in Yalda’s Zein neighborhood.
At the present time heavy firefights are ongoing as Syrian rebels cling on to their positions in the Zein neighborhood, refusing to concede an inch of territory in what is already a cramped area that was pocketed by pro-government forces many years ago.
The attack by ISIS comes after Jaysh al-Islam carried out a powerful raid against it exactly one week ago in the orchards area between the Yalda and Hajjar As-Aswad districts – an engagement which saw the many Islamic State fighters killed.
