BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:18 P.M.) – Islamic State fighters have ejected Syrian rebels from a key neighborhood in the southern districts of Damascus city amid a tireless offensive operation that has been ongoing for over one week now.
For more than a week ISIS has been chipping away at the defenses of rival militant groups – namely Jaysh al-Islam and the Free Syrian Army – in the Syrian capital’s southern districts (generally identified as separate towns from the city) .
Moments ago, Islamic State sources reported that forces of the terrorist group had finally taken full control of the long-contested Al-Zein neighborhood from Syrian rebels after breaching their last positions in the area.
The week-long battle for the neighborhood has seen many dozens of rebel fighters killed and a unclear number more capture by ISIS.
With the Al-Zein residential area now under the control of ISIS a rather large gap has been torn in rebel lines, possibly allowing for follow-up exploitation attacks by the terrorist group that may lead to it taking even more areas in southern Damascus.
