Moments ago, the Iraqi Army and Popular Mobilization Forces (PMU) captured the town of Bashir after a heavy firefight with ISIS fighters south of Kirkuk.

This advance comes as Iraqi forces also captured the town of Mahana 3 days ago and have made gradual gains in the ISIS-held territory of northern Iraq since early 2015.

Bashir has otherwise been under Islamic State control since the summer of 2014; it was initially captured during a large-scale offensive which had ISIS fighters seize large parts of the country, including Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul.
