BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:40 P.M.) – Elite troops of the Syrian Arab Army have kicked-off a new assault against Islamic State militants in the northeastern countryside of Hama province following improved weather conditions and the arrival of new forces to back up regional operations.
According to military-affiliated sources, moments ago, elite forces of the Syrian Arab Army including units from the Republican Guard, Military Intelligence Shield Force and Qalamoun Shield Forces launched a renewed attack against ISIS in northwest Syria.
So far, Syrian troops – backed up by artillery and airpower – have taken control of a key series of hill overlooking the ISIS-held town of Rasm ad-Dahl in northwest Hama which is now expected to fall within a matter of hours.
Furthermore, reports say that Syrian forces managed to kill five or so Islamic State terrorists during the operation to take the hills around Rasm ad-Dahl.
The renewed offensive push comes amid the return of favorable weather conditions in northwest Syria as well as the arrival of reinforcements from the Republican Guard.
