BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:37 A.M.) – The Bolivian Permanent Representative to UN Sacha Sergio remembered the words of the former US Secretary of State Colin Powell when he brought “convincing proof” of weapons of mass destruction before the UN Security Council in 2003, speaking before the council in New York on Friday.
“I would like to recall what happened in this Security Council, just a few years ago” he said, the “Secretary of State of the United States [Colin Powell] entered this room and according to his own words presented us a convincing proof that there were weapons of the mass destruction in Iraq.”
“It was used as a reason for the invasion and after this invasion caused 1 million deaths. It launched a series of atrocities in this region” he went on holding up a photo of Powell at the 2003 meeting.
Sergio’s comments came during a discussion of the US airstrike on Syria’s al-Shayrat Airbase on Friday.
US President Donald Trump ordered the attack as a direct response to Tuesday’s alleged chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhoun near Idlib for which he holds Assad responsible.
A total of 59 tomahawk missiles were fired at Shayrat Airfield in Homs governorate, at 4:40 local time (00:40 GMT) on Friday.
