The Syrian Arab Army’s 104th Airborne Brigade of the Syrian Republican Guard (Harss Al-Jamhouri) – in cooperation with a local tribe – has captured the strategic village of Al-Mari’iyyah, killing scores of militants and destroying a number of armored vehicles in the process. The news of Al-Mari’iyyah’s capture comes one day after the 104th Brigade achieved significant progress in this rural area located east of the once besieged Deir Ezzor Military Airport.
The 104th Brigade’s success in Al-Mari’iyyah began yesterday, when they broke-through the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s fortifications and quickly secured the farms adjacent to the Deir Ezzor Military Airport.
Exhausted and ill-prepared for another attack on Tuesday morning, the ISIS militants entrenched at the remaining farms in Al-Mari’iyyah were overwhelmed by the 104th Brigade’s fierce attack that netted a total of 43 confirmed casualties in the last 48 hours. Among the ISIS casualties were a number of foreigners from North Africa, including “Abu ‘Alaa Al-Mughrabi” (Moroccan), “Abu ‘Ubeida Al-Tounisi” (Tunisian), “’Umar ‘Issa Al-Rabiyya” (Egyptian), “Ismaa’eel Moussa Al-‘Ameer” (Egyptian), and “Mohammad Nour al-Deen Ahmad (Egyptian).
Since the announcement of ISIS’ offensive in the provincial capital of Deir Ezzor, they have seemingly lost more ground than they originally controlled in December 2014. The 104th Brigade has been able to capture most of the area north of the Military Airport; this left ISIS with only one direction to attack the Military Airport. The recapture of Al-Mari’iyyah leaves ISIS with only one remaining area in the vicinity of the Military Airport to launch an attack from; that is Al-Jafra.
