BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:50 A.M.) – The battle for the key city of Tripoli has intensified over the last week as both the Government of National Accord (GNA) and Libyan National Army (LNA) trade offensives south of the capital.
Over the last 72 hours, both the GNA and LNA have traded control over the town of Aziziyah and the 4th Division Base.
The LNA has been trying to close in on the GNA’s salient between the two towns of Swami and Zahraa; however, the GNA forces have been relentless in their defense of the area.
In fact, the GNA has now pressed the LNA’s positions at the town of Swami as they look to expel the units loyal to Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar from this area south of Tripoli.
The LNA is attempting to obstruct the GNA’s advance at Swami by launching several airstrikes over their supply route from Tripoli.
At the same time, the parliament in Benghazi recently voted to continue their operations until they capture Tripoli from the GNA.
With Egypt and the United Arab Emirates supporting them, the LNA has the means to capture Tripoli from the GNA; however, not without a fierce fight that will no doubt prove costly down the line.
