BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:40 A.M.) – The Armenian Ministry of Defense is preparing to upgrade their air force with a new batch of Russian-made Su-30SM multirole fighter jets.

Citing the spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Defense, Artsrun Ovannisyan, Armenpress reported that Yerevan is preparing to ink a deal to acquire these fighter jets in the near future.

“Yes, we are working on purchasing these fighter aircraft,” Ovannisyan said but refused to elaborate.

In December 2018 Armenia’s Acting Defense Minister David Tonoyan said that Armenia and Russia are preparing to sign a contract on delivering Su-30SM fighter aircraft to Yerevan.

Currently, Armenia posses three different types of attack aircraft; these include the Russian-made Su-25, Mi-24 (attack helicopter), and L-39.

Since the founding of their air force in 1992, Armenia has actively worked to acquire new air assets in order to strengthen their position in the region.
