The Syrian National Coalition, which is based in Turkey and claims to be the legitimate government of Syria, has urged “All Arab and Islamic nations to cut diplomatic ties with Iran” in a statement released yesterday. The organisation also applauded Saudi Arabia’s recent decision to sever ties with Iran and expel all Iranian diplomats.
This move comes as Saudi Arabia attempts to rally friendly, predominately Sunni-Muslim states in a growing geopolitical struggle against the Shia theocracy of Iran. Regional sectarian tensions are seemingly on the rise after Saudi Arabia executed top-Shia Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr 3 days ago.
While Iran backs the Syrian government and Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia has voiced support for the Syrian opposition and more specifically the Islamic Front rebel militia. Meanwhile, the two countries also back different factions in the Yemeni civil war amidst several other disputes.
