DAMASCUS, SYRIA (9:00 A.M.) – On Friday, the United States Air Force conducted two sorties against jihadist insurgents in northeastern Somalia upon the request of the Mogadishu-based Government.
According to the U.S. Africa Command, the first pinpoint airstrike occurred at midnight while the second follow-up strike took place at 11 a.m. local Somalia time.
An official statement on the two aerial sorties stated that several terrorists were killed but also underlined that intelligence agencies were accessing the results of the air raid.
US warplanes reportedly targeted jihadist militants under the command of regional ISIS leader Abdul Qadir Mumin in the countryside of Bara province, often refered to simply as the Puntland region.
Abdul Qadir Mumin is a Somali-born British citizen who defected from Al-Shaabab on October 22, 2015 after the latter group decided to stick to its guns and stay loyal to Al-Qaeda rather than defect to the Islamic State.
