ALEPPO, SYRIA (8:30 A.M.) – The Aleppo Shari’ah Council issued a fatwa on Saturday, calling the Turkish-backed “Euphrates Shield” offensive a “legal jihad” against the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS).
The council made this “jihad” permissible on Saturday because Turkey is a Muslim country and a staunch ally of the jihadist rebels in Syria.
Making matters even more complicated, several groups participating in this offensive are allied with one of the largest jihadist rebel groups: Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham (formerly Al-Nusra Front).
In fact, one of the main rebel factions participating in Operation Euphrates Shield is now fighting in a coalition that includes Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham in southern Aleppo.
The U.S. has yet to comment on this statement issued by the Aleppo Shari’ah Council.
