DAMASCUS, SYRIA (5:10 P.M.) – A top military commander for the notorious Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement was assassinated yesterday in west Aleppo amid rising tensions among rival rebel groups.
The slain commander was killed along with his bodyguard when unidentified assailants opened fire at his vehicle near Kafr Naseh town in west Aleppo countryside.
In the wake of the attack, the National Liberation Front – of which Zenki Movement is a major component – launched a security campaign in west Aleppo; arresting dozens of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham militants.
The crackdown was further fueled when a member of HTS was caught on camera planting a roadside bomb on a road controlled by the Front alliance.
In response, the al-Qaeda-affiliate Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham arrested several Zenki fighters.
The situation even worsened when both rival parties summoned huge reinforcements in anticipation of wider clashes.
