DAMASCUS, SYRIA (0:20 P.M.) – This morning, the media wing of the hardline jihadist group Al-Shabaab claimed its fighters had assassinated a prominent intelligence official in the Somali capital.
Al-Shabaab sleeper cells were said to have tracked down Mohammedi Haj Ali and shot him dead while traveling to work. The assailants then escaped the scene and are still at large.
Mogadishu is otherwise entirely under government control while the jihadist insurgency plagues many rural and some coastal areas of the embattled African country.
Al-Shabaab is loosely tied to the Islamic State and notably uses the same black flag which has the Muslim Shahada written in Arabic on it.
