BEIRUT: Beirut Judge Ziad Abu Haidar filed official charges Tuesday against Al-Jazeera TV host Faisal Qassem over slandering and defaming the Lebanese Army and state, judicial sources said. The sources told The Daily Star that Qassem will be prosecuted on several libel charges including “insulting and tarnishing the reputation of the Lebanese Army, undermining its role and achievements and humiliating the Lebanese state.”
The Publications Court, presided by judge Roukoz Rizk, set the start of the court hearings for March 11. Qassem, an anti-Syrian regime news host, was sued over a post on his Twitter account in which he ridiculed the Lebanese Army, saying the only achievements it had made since its establishment were shooting video clips with Lebanese singers Wael Kfoury, Najwa Karam, Elissa and Haifa Wehbe, along with setting fire to Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon.
A search and locate memo was issued against Qassem two weeks ago for failing to show up to two hearings where he was expected to deliver oral testimony over Twitter the posts he made in September.
