BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:00 P.M.) – Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham elected a new leader this week after holding their annual leadership conference.
According to the Islamist group, Jaber ‘Ali Basha has been elected as the leader of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, replacing Hassan Soufan after his short tenure in power.
Basha, 34, was born in the Idlib Governorate town of Binnish in 1984; he has been a member of the Islamist group since their inception.
Many opposition activists, commanders, and fighters have criticized this move via social media because Basha has virtually no experience in any leadership role.
Other opposition activists claimed that Basha was elected because Turkey was pressuring Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham to replace their former leader.
Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham is now part of the Syrian National Liberation Front, which is under the command of the Turkish Armed Forces.
